Point 5 - Final Track Choice - 'Goodbye My Lover' by James Blunt

Final Track Choice I have chosen to use ‘Goodbye my Lover’ by James Blunt . I will use his music video edit which at 3:57 is shorter than the full single.  I have chosen to use this track because I feel that it is a relatable and meaningful song for so many. It portrays a breakup between the artist and a female, and he feels lost without her, and he knows life will never be the same. It contains a level of ambiguity, as many people that listen to the song believe that Blunt is instead grieving over a deceased girlfriend. Therefore, I find myself gifted with the licence to choose which way I want to portray the song in my work.  I have chosen a track by James Blunt because I believe he is a popular and emotional songwriter. All of his songs are related to a painful ordeal that he has gone through, such as his recent ‘Monsters’, which is about saying goodbye to his exceedingly ill father, and his songs therefore allow listeners to emotionally connect with the work. Final 3 Songs shortlist ‘Goodbye my lover’ by James Blunt James Blunt served in the Army for the six years between 1996 and 2002, and rose to the rank of Captain. He left the military to pursue his music career. He had spent his leave writing songs and released the album ‘Back to Bedlam’ in 2003, which included the single ‘Goodbye my Lover’. Since then, he has released 5 more albums, the most recent being ‘Once upon a Mind’, released in 2019. The music video for this song can be found here: James Blunt has a fairly simplistic style in his music videos, and they are often filmed in one location. A lot of his work is quite sad and dark. Key elements of love songs Performance - should contain lip syncing etc Narrative - should contain an engaging narrative with shots that relate to they lyrics Mise en scene - should contain different costumes, props, and locations Editing - shots should be edited in time with the beat Emotion - should contain emotion that allows audience to identify with and form a relationship with the video Dancing - most videos should contain some sort of movement applicable to the rhythm of the music. Lighting - lighting should be used to enhance the professionalism of the video A range of camera shots to create an atmosphere and a relationship between consumer and artist. Colour - Different coloured lights and editing enhance the sense of love in a video and are commonplace in the genre.
