Point 15 - Video Story Plan

GML Video Synopsis Opening: The video will open with the male star playing the piano and performing the lyrics. He will be dressed in kilt uniform. There is an implication that he has returned from a funeral. Rested on the piano the words, handwritten, ‘Goodbye my Lover’. The camera will fill the screen with these by way of introducing the song. Main Video body: The male star will then be filmed in his bedroom, sitting on his bed performing the lyrics. The room will be fairly dark. In response to this, the female star will be introduced, sitting on a bed in a brightly lit room. The room will be covered in white sheets, and the actress will be clothed in a white dress. This should create an implication of Heaven. The video will briefly refer back to the male star playing the piano. The actor will then be filmed walking outside. He will walk to Covesea cliffs. While he is walking, the camera will perform flashback shots simulating his memory. These will include a shot of the couple at

Point 14 - Planning for Artist Cover Images

Due to the format, I was unable to display my work in the blod pgost. Hence, I have attached the link to the Google Doc. Please find below. Cover Images Link

Point 13 - Artist name

I have named my artist 'JP'.

Point 13 - Artist Logo

Image
This is the logo that I have designed. I have decided to refer to artist simply as 'JP'. The piano is synergetic with the male star's piano which will be present throughout the video, and the typography resembles any handwritten text in the video. The font of 'JP' is synergetic with the typography used within the video, including in the opening shot showing the song title.

Point 11 - Statement of Intent (first draft)

Draft Statement of Intent Name: John Prendergast How do you intend to use the four areas of the media theoretical framework to communicate meaning and meet the requirements of your chosen brief? (approx. 400 words) This statement of intent will detail the key concepts and ideas behind a music video for the track ‘Goodbye my Lover’. The main concept and framework that will be evident in the video is as follows. The video will open with the star male actor sitting at a piano. He will be dressed in a kilt, Bonnie Prince Charlie jacket, and a bowtie. This should imply that he has just returned from a funeral, and the presence of tartan reflects some of the artist’s own personality, as well as separating this from other videos of the genre. He will proceed to play the introduction to the song on the piano and sing. The main body of the video will consist of the male star being depressed and upset, flashbacks to when the girl was still around, and comparing shots where the two are in a loc

Point 9 - 'Goodbye My Lover' Audience Research

Audience Research My perfect audience member will be a version of the ‘Mainstream: Rah’ tribe (according to Channel 4’s public audience research). Gender - The audience is primarily men, as the track is narrated from a male perspective. However, women can also expect to be emotionally engaged, as the song (and subsequent video) is relatable for most people. Age - As stated in the brief, the audience will be aged 16-24. Clothing and appearance - My audience will have a fairly smart dress style, and first impressions could see them labelled as looking ‘posh’. They dress down into chinos and a shirt, and are protected by their gilets and Barbour jackets when the summer is harsh. They are not seen in public wearing trackies and a hoodie. Boat shoes or penny loafers are their go to footwear, and they wear bow ties to formal occasions; be it a wedding, funeral, or ball. They are clean shaven. Food - They prioritise a Sunday roast, and they enjoy their weekday soup lunches. They generally ref

Point 8 - Copyright Permission Letter for 'Goodbye My Lover'

John Prendergast Spynie House, Elgin, Morayshire, Scotland, IV30 5PG 19/04/2021 Custard Records 8500 Melrose Avenue, Suite 207, West Hollywood CA, United States, 90069 Dear Sir/Madam Letter seeking permission to use ‘Goodbye My Lover’ in A Level music video I am writing to seek permission to use your track ‘Goodbye My Lover’, composed by James Blunt, in a music video. I am a Media Studies A Level student at Gordonstoun School, and have been tasked as part of my coursework to create a music video for a chosen track. I will not be earning any money from the use of this track or from my resulting video. It will be posted on Youtube, and analysed by the OCR exam board. Thank you for your time. Yours faithfully, John Prendergast Student, Gordonstoun School

Point 7 - Things to Consider

Things to Consider Enigma An enigma could be incorporated into my video as there is already a sense of ambiguity within the song, and I could build on this to encourage feelings of mystery in the audience. The song leaves it open to interpretation as to whether the artist has split up from his girlfriend, or whether his girlfriend has passed away. This makes the song relatable to a wider audience, and builds an emotional connection with more people. I can lean heavily on the idea that his girlfriend has passed, while leaving out how or why she has died. This should create a sense of mystery and enigma, encouraging viewers to watch on.  Black and White vs Colour A colour wash, be it black and white or a yellow 80s esque filter would be applicable to my video to simulate an older, historic film setting. This would perhaps increase the nostalgic feeling in my video, as well as help to display a sound editing ability. Camera and editing A variety of camera angles will increase the quality

Point 6 - James Blunt Past Videos

Image
James Blunt video research ‘You’re Beautiful’. I like this video due to the emotion that is present throughout the film, and due to the simplicity with which it is presented. Blunt has managed to create a powerful sense of love and sadness by relying on his own passion and feelings: he has not had to use images of  a sexualised girl to engage the audience, and this makes the video yet more powerful. ‘Cold’. This video is an intertextual continuation of Blunts earlier video ‘You’re Beautiful’, which was released 16 years prior to the release of ‘Cold’. I like this video because it replicates much of  the emotion present in his older video. Furthermore, it shows a man who has moved on from his earlier troubles and demons, and can act as an inspiration to people, proving that one’s problems do not last forever. Again, it is a simple concept, and it does not require the sexualisation of women to provoke emotion. ‘Monsters’. This is a video consisting of very few long shots, and was presuma
