Point 9 - 'Goodbye My Lover' Audience Research

Audience Research

My perfect audience member will be a version of the ‘Mainstream: Rah’ tribe (according to Channel 4’s public audience research).

  • Gender - The audience is primarily men, as the track is narrated from a male perspective. However, women can also expect to be emotionally engaged, as the song (and subsequent video) is relatable for most people.

  • Age - As stated in the brief, the audience will be aged 16-24.

  • Clothing and appearance - My audience will have a fairly smart dress style, and first impressions could see them labelled as looking ‘posh’. They dress down into chinos and a shirt, and are protected by their gilets and Barbour jackets when the summer is harsh. They are not seen in public wearing trackies and a hoodie. Boat shoes or penny loafers are their go to footwear, and they wear bow ties to formal occasions; be it a wedding, funeral, or ball. They are clean shaven.

  • Food - They prioritise a Sunday roast, and they enjoy their weekday soup lunches. They generally refrain from ‘common’ fast food chains, unless they’re on a night out; where they might just stretch to a 2am mcdonalds. They do not settle for supermarket ‘value’ produce, and they prefer to shop at M&S; although like much of the middle class, they have a soft spot for Lidl.

  • Hobbies - They love sports, enjoying both playing and watching rugby, tennis, and cricket. They look forward to the yearly family ski holiday. They enjoy fishing and shooting. They keep themselves fit, going for daily runs or cycles.

  • Music - They like most of the charts music. They listen mainly to pop, and disapprove of rap and grime.

  • Education - They are privately educated at a leading boarding school. They either studied, are studying at, or have aspirations of studying at a Russell Group or Oxbridge university.

  • Values - The audience member values family, loved ones, and friends as a priority. Their girlfriend or boyfriend is at the heart of everything that they do.

  • Experience - The audience member has experienced a breakup, or the loss of a loved one.

How will my video attract my described perfect audience member?

My video will portray a song written by an artist who is often labelled in the media as ‘posh’, and is consequently popular among the middle class and the hypothetical figure that I have described. I will include many of the features of the audience member in the video, such as similar dress sense, implications of similar hobbies, and prioritization of loved ones, which will allow the desired audience to be drawn in and emotionally connect with the video, and place themselves inside the situation portrayed. My chosen track ‘Goodbye my Lover’ matches the preferred popular genre of music of my audience. The core storyline of the video will be the experience and journey of losing a partner. However audiences will also be able to relate to the video if they’ve lost any family member, or experienced a breakup, as the main emotions that they will have experienced are the same.
