Point 15 - Video Story Plan

 GML Video Synopsis


Opening: The video will open with the male star playing the piano and performing the lyrics. He will be dressed in kilt uniform. There is an implication that he has returned from a funeral. Rested on the piano the words, handwritten, ‘Goodbye my Lover’. The camera will fill the screen with these by way of introducing the song.


Main Video body: The male star will then be filmed in his bedroom, sitting on his bed performing the lyrics. The room will be fairly dark. In response to this, the female star will be introduced, sitting on a bed in a brightly lit room. The room will be covered in white sheets, and the actress will be clothed in a white dress. This should create an implication of Heaven. The video will briefly refer back to the male star playing the piano. The actor will then be filmed walking outside. He will walk to Covesea cliffs. While he is walking, the camera will perform flashback shots simulating his memory. These will include a shot of the couple at the summit of Ben Rinnes. He will help her to stand up on the Triangulation pillar. The video will flick back to him walking, before going back to Rinnes to see that he is now standing at the summit alone. Another flashback shot will show the couple shooting together. He will be helping the girl. He will then be shown in the same setting with his gun, but alone. A third flashback shot will show the couple playing with a dog. He will then be shown alone with the dog. The video at this point will again return to him as a pianist. Next, some typography will be included as he writes on notelets some of the lyrics to the song. These notelets will be put on the fire, and the camera will zoom up into the words as they go up in flames.


Ending: The male star will arrive at the cliffs. He will crouch down on the edge, before looking up and seeing the deceased’s face in the sky. The camera will film a pan shot of the bottom of the cliffs and sea below. The camera will then leave the male star be, gradually filming shots further and further away, until he can hardly be seen. The film will cut back to the star still dressed up playing the piano until going to the final scene. The female star will be back in her white covered room, dressed in a white dress sitting on the bed. The male star will walk in wearing his kilt, a shirt with top button undone, jacket and waistcoat, and his bowtie untied. They will embrace each other.

This ending should be ambiguous, with some viewers interpreting that this is still him dreaming and thinking while playing the piano, and others believing that the camera left him at the cliffs to pass, and that the final scene is him arriving in Heaven.

Final 3 Songs shortlist ‘Goodbye my lover’ by James Blunt James Blunt served in the Army for the six years between 1996 and 2002, and rose to the rank of Captain. He left the military to pursue his music career. He had spent his leave writing songs and released the album ‘Back to Bedlam’ in 2003, which included the single ‘Goodbye my Lover’. Point 9 - 'Goodbye My Lover' Audience Research

Audience Research My perfect audience member will be a version of the ‘Mainstream: Rah’ tribe (according to Channel 4’s public audience research). Gender - The audience is primarily men, as the track is narrated from a male perspective. However, women can also expect to be emotionally engaged, as the song (and subsequent video) is relatable for most people. Age - As stated in the brief, the audience will be aged 16-24. Clothing and appearance - My audience will have a fairly smart dress style, and first impressions could see them labelled as looking ‘posh’. They dress down into chinos and a shirt, and are protected by their gilets and Barbour jackets when the summer is harsh. They are not seen in public wearing trackies and a hoodie. Boat shoes or penny loafers are their go to footwear, and they wear bow ties to formal occasions; be it a wedding, funeral, or ball. They are clean shaven.
